Henrik Fisker hints at Fisker’s potential adoption of NACS, as prominent automakers and charging companies embrace the industry standard.
Today, Henrik Fisker addressed questions on social media regarding a crucial aspect of the future of Fisker electric vehicles. Throughout the past month, people have been asking Henrik repeatedly if his company would adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS). Once again today, someone brought up this topic and asked Henrik if he would consider incorporating NACS charging ports for the Fisker Ocean. Henrik responded to the inquiry about Tesla’s charging standard in a concise and direct manner. He simply stated, “Monday.” He also confirmed that the odds of Fisker going with NACS was “pretty good!”
Fisker’s NACS Adoption Plan
Up until this point, Fisker the company has remained fairly quiet about NACS, except for when Henrik Fisker addressed it during his recent CNBC interview. During the interview, Henrik acknowledged NACS, but mentioned that 90% of electric vehicle charging occurs at home. It appears we may get an official announcement about Fisker’s NACS adoption plan on Monday. We might receive the announcement in two parts.
Firstly, it could involve the adoption of the charging port on future Fisker Ocean vehicles built in 2024 or 2025. For Fisker vehicles without built-in NACS compatibility, a hardware plug adapter and software adjustments would be necessary. Secondly, there might be a component where Fisker electric vehicles, such as the Fisker Ocean, gain access to Tesla’s Supercharger Network. We will have to wait and see how this situation unfolds.
The Emergence of the North American Charging Standard
Currently, all non-Tesla EVs like the Fisker Ocean utilize a CCS charging port. However, Tesla developed its own charging port, formerly known as the Tesla port. Last year, Tesla cleverly renamed it the North American Charging Standard (NACS). NACS has taken the EV market by storm, making it a self-fulfilling prophecy as Tesla named it and prominent automakers and charging companies have adopted it. This adoption is paving the way for a more streamlined and convenient charging experience for EV owners across the North American continent.
Prominent US Automakers Embrace NACS
It all began when Ford, a prominent figure in the US automotive industry, embraced NACS a couple of months ago, setting off a domino effect that reverberated through the industry. General Motors soon followed suit, further accelerating the adoption rate and intensifying the fervor for NACS. Rivian, a forward-thinking pure EV company like Fisker, eagerly announced its intention to integrate Tesla’s design standard.
Foreign Automakers Embrace NACS
Volvo, followed by Polestar, committed to adopting the NACS port in 2025, giving their users access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. Mercedes-Benz is the latest automaker to join last week. This German automaker plans to adopt Tesla’s charging standard starting in 2025, initially providing an adapter for its existing EVs equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) in North America.
NACS as the Industry Standard for EV Charging Infrastructure
Charging infrastructure providers have also taken notice. Electrify America, majority-owned by Volkswagen, also joined the NACS movement by adding NACS connectors to their electric vehicle chargers, further enhancing the accessibility and compatibility of the charging infrastructure. EV charging companies such as EVgo, ChargePoint, Tritium, Blink, and Wallbox rallied behind NACS, solidifying their position as the rapidly emerging industry standard. It’s worth noting, two of these charging companies, ChargePoint and Wallbox, are Fisker charging partners in North America.
Importance of Universal Adoption: No Company Left Behind
The widespread adoption of NACS holds the potential to significantly improve the EV charging experience for consumers, particularly during long-distance journeys. Standardizing charging ports would enhance convenience, a critical factor in driving mass adoption of electric vehicles. The exponential growth in adoption of NACS underscores its importance in reshaping the EV landscape. It’s also fostering collaboration among automakers and charging companies to build a cohesive and improved charging infrastructure.
As more key players rally behind NACS, the electric vehicle industry moves closer to a future where seamless charging is the norm. This unity in standards offers EV owners a more accessible and efficient charging experience. It will propel us toward a greener and sustainable future. It is essential for all EV companies to follow suit; otherwise, they risk being left behind. As a result, Fisker’s plans for future compatibility with the NACS network is expected to be announced.
