First Look: Our Fisker Ocean Test Drive

Test driving the Fisker Ocean with Abbie Eaton at the Magna Steyr test track in Graz Austria

We had a chance to test drive a pre production Fisker Ocean and here is what we thought about the electric SUV.

Today, we had a chance to get behind the wheel of a pre production Fisker Ocean electric SUV. Two words. It’s incredible. The Fisker Ocean test drive exceeded our expectations. The car handles better than our Tesla Model 3 we drove cross country this past week. If you’ve been following along, you know we’re on a family road trip to Walt Disney World. We took our existing electric vehicle from San Diego, CA to Orlando, FL. What you didn’t know is that we were also invited to test drive the Fisker Ocean at the same exact time.

We knew this was an amazing opportunity to test drive the very electric SUV we cover on a regular basis. With support from the family, we ventured out to Graz, Austria to the Magna Steyr factory to get a first look. Flying out of Orlando International Airport on Sunday night, we landed in Graz on Monday afternoon by way of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. We were greeted by Fisker team members at the airport and hotel when we arrived. The entire Fisker team provided a warm welcome and were excellent hosts throughout our entire stay. Thank you.

The Fisker Ocean Delivers

We’ve seen videos of Henrik driving the electric SUV. Now, it was our turn to put the vehicle through the wringer. Granted we’re not a professional race car driver, rather an every day driver just like you. However, we did have the pleasure of sitting next to Abbie Eaton, British motorsports racing driver, as she performed a demo on the course for us. The course has a straight away, a slalom course, roundabout, and ice simulation. As expected, Abbie zipped through the course flawlessly.

Having never driven a car on a test track before, it is pretty intimidating and a bit nerve-racking. Not to mention, team Fisker watching from the sidelines — don’t mess up! By request, we asked Abbie to coach us through every aspect of the course. She told us when to punch the accelerator, turn the wheel, or slam on the brakes. This experience alone was priceless. We had the opportunity to drive the vehicle two times for a total of 20 minutes. It was brilliant and more importantly fun!

Solid Choice

In the short amount of time we test drove the vehicle, we knew we made a great decision pre-ordering our Fisker Ocean One. Hands down, the vehicle drives better than the Tesla Model 3 we just drove 2,750 miles to Walt Disney World. It’s going to be the perfect every day family car and excellent for long road trips. It has the space we need for the day-to-day and a sporty fun side when we want a thrill of power and speed. The vehicle lives up to the hype.

The Fisker Ocean doesn’t throw you back into your seat when you smash the accelerator like our current electric vehicle. Rather it gently and very quickly accelerates faster than our Tesla Model 3, which by the way has the Performance Boost. It was actually refreshing. We held down the accelerator as long as we could on our second go on the test track until the turn at the end of the straight away. Who knows what the speedometer displayed, but we were going Henrik Fisker and Abbie Eaton fast. It was pretty exciting!

Safety First

The steering was smooth and effortless as expected just driving to and from various areas on the track and during both the slalom and ice simulation. However, it was most apparent when performing a slalom in and out of cones. In the real-world, we’ve never had to avoid a moose or a large object on the road. Going in and out of cones showed us how well the Fisker Ocean can perform if you need to dodge any sort of object even one after another.

Now, the ice simulation made up of slippery wet tiles was pretty interesting. It really created a simulation that felt just like ice. You could feel the Fisker Ocean assisting to prevent an accident such as sliding off the road. The roundabout showed us how the car hugs the road around corners preventing the driver from losing control. It was all reassuring from a safety standpoint. Well done Fisker.

Two Thumbs Up

Overall, the vehicle was a blast to drive. If you didn’t notice, we got to test drive the Fisker Ocean painted in Horizon Gray, with MaliBlu interior, and black 22″ F3 SlipStream wheels. It was just like the vehicle at the Paris Motor Show. This is going to be a great car for our family, it is more spacious than our existing electric vehicle, sportier, and of course better looking.

Also, we had a chance to talk with Fisker executives about the Fisker Ocean, technology, user experience, and sustainability. Everything delivered today was very informative and we learned some new things. We even got to see a Fisker Ocean painted in Blue Planet, with Black Abyss Plus interior, and silver 22″ F5 AirGlider wheels.

The Fisker Ocean has all sorts of easter eggs hidden inside it. We were blown away that we keep finding new things. Like the crest of a wave breaking on the head rest, there are other cool design features in the interior you don’t even know about! More to come. BTW, the UI on the 17.1″ display is great and the new Fisker Ocean configurator is slick — you’re going to love it!

First Look Photo Gallery

We took hundreds of new photos today of the Fisker Ocean. We don’t have enough time to upload them all right now as we’re trying to get back from Europe with Tropical Storm Nicole causing havoc in Florida. We’ll also be re-reviewing the Fisker Ocean interior since that’s had a massive update since we saw it in San Diego.

So, we’re going to give you a sampling in the First Look Photo Gallery below. However, over the coming days and weeks we’ll be writing and sharing our experience after looking at one of the latest Fisker Oceans. It happens to be the most polished Fisker Ocean anyone outside of Fisker has seen to date. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel and socials for more updates to come. Fingers crossed we make it back to Florida. Wish us luck!

PS – Our original pick of the interior was the right choice for us (photos below). Wait until you hear all about the Black Abyss Plus interior! Oh, and the 22” F6 Vortex wheels…yeah, those will be available on the Ocean One!

PSS – The Magna Steyr factory tour was awesome getting to see Fisker Ocean electric SUVs rolling down the assembly line right in front of our eyes. The machine is definitely running! We can’t wait to tell you all about it. 👍👍

  1. Wow I’m so jealous! Congrats on being one of the few to test drive it! Sounds like it’ll exceed expectations for future owners! I’d hope to test drive one soon

  2. #jealous. Congratulations, you deserve the opportunity. Can’t wait to hear and see more while I wait for the real thing.

  3. Love hearing about all the details of your visit and test drive! Awesome news about the F6 vortex wheels on the Ocean One!! Do you know if they will also come in black? Travel safe and enjoy the rest of your trip in Florida Sean!!

  4. That looks incredible! I’m so excited for this brand. Thank you so much for your efforts Sean, love your content!

  5. Many thanks for the review, the delay or lack of response in the throttle was my main concern (I am a reservation holder). I’d hope the throttle response would be improved with software update or driving mode etc as it was very sluggish of the line. Ultimately there is no point in having 550hp if you can’t access all of it.

    1. I completely agree. I was shocked to see how slow it was to respond to his aggressive tip in for an acceleration run. That would absolutely kill the experience for me.

  6. Sean, these are the best interior pictures we have seen so far- even better than the ones released by Fisker in sm posts or in the the press release/media packet

  7. The wheels looks awesome. However, those seats looks really weird to me. Some may love them, but they just don’t look right to me. Probably need to see them in person to really form an opinion.

What are your thoughts?
